What is an Orthodontist?
An orthodontist is someone who specializes in diagnosing, preventing, and addressing dental and facial abnormalities. This can include crowded or crooked teeth, gaps between teeth, or malocclusion (i.e., bite misalignment). To become an orthodontist, an individual must achieve a dental degree before enrolling in a residency program, which can last two or three years. During this time, hands-on training as well as textbook instruction is required through an accredited program with the American Dental Association.
Dr. Wigal’s Education and Commitment
to Orthodontics
After graduating Summa Cum Laude from West Virginia University, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in biology in 2001 before attending the West Virginia University School of Dentistry. Working toward his Doctor of Dental Surgery, he graduated with the highest honors in 2005 and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society.
After dental school, he attended a residency program for three years, focusing his time and efforts on orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. He earned a certificate specialty in orthodontics from the West Virginia Department of Orthodontics as well as a master’s degree. From there, he received training in the diagnostic and treatment philosophy of the Six Elements of Orofacial Harmoney – the ability to incorporate dental and facial treatment into an orthodontic plan.
Although he completed his formal education many years ago, he remains an avid learner, continuing to pursue additional opportunities to hone his skills, expand his knowledge, and provide the latest information and technologies to patients. Each year, he seeks new ways to complete his continuing education and remains an active member of the American Association of Orthodontics, American Dental Association, Ohio Dental Association, and the Six Elements Study Club. He is also the residing president of the W.D. Miller Dental Society of Licking and Knox County. Dr. Wigal has also had research published.
